Leadership is responsibility and empowering others to perform at their best and enabling them to grow. Based on my experiences and awareness below are the points which anybody can reflect to evaluate whether they have leadership skills or not: Ready to Trust Others Ready to Empower others Being Empathetic Being a good listener Being a visionary Risk Taker Anybody can become an effective Leader with consistent and diligent efforts on the above-mentioned skills enhancements. The biggest challenge/drawback which any young leaders encounter is the lack of patience and listening skills. I would say, if someone is not a good listener then he/she can’t be a leader at all. Reliability trait takes any leader to be a very strong effective Leader. Reliability is one of the biggest traits any team looks towards the leaders. When any leader is reliable the team trust and counts on him/her. Humility clubbed with reliability will be the biggest advantage which any Leader can showcase. Leaders always have authority and responsibility, but how they use these two attributes defines the team’s performance. Any team with strong reliable leader will be very effective, as it knows that the leader is going to take care of all aspects for them. Reliability sounds to be simple/easy to practice, but, it is tough. Leadership clubbed with Empathy will results in Effective and successful Leadership. Having empathy towards the team and working with them establishes a strong relationship and which will result in a very strong cohesive unit being formed. There is a big misconception that, businesses and leaders shouldn’t be empathetic as it will result in losing the momentum and not meeting the timelines for the expected results. Leadership is not an authority, but it is responsibility. Demanding Leadership is one of the Leadership styles which seems to be aggressive to achieve the desired results. Demanding Leaders work towards achieving the organizational goals with aggressive style and seems to be successful also. Demanding Leaders order and dictates their followers to accomplish their tasks and to be successful always. The team which works under these types of Leaders will always be order takers and accomplishes the results without any innovative or proactive approach/thought process. One of the main traits of any effective or strong Leader is, how approachable he is. An approachable Leader with strong strategy and vision is a successful leader. Leader who creates the environment for his team to be approachable irrespective of all the challenges, issues or suggestions will be able to create a very strong cohesive team. Trust, passion and collaboration will be automatically established when the leader is approachable. Leader should always look at his team as an extended family and be ready to jump in and support any team member based on the need. The complete energy of the team is primarily driven by Energetic leader and who always thrives to shield the team from any obstacles. Leaders are compelled to take very strong/big decisions at many instances keeping the interest of the organization and it is the energy and transparency of leaders which motivates the team to move forward in achieving organizational goals. Leadership is not about authority and it is about responsibility and empowering others. Level-Headed Leader is someone who responds to the situation and not the one who reacts to the situation. If you observe, there is difference between responding and reacting. Level-Headed nature lies within these two words difference. Any leader to be a great leader has to be level-headed. Being level-headed is not that tough, it is just the approach any leader takes and how he implements. The words which are spoken by any leader being level headed should mean what he wanted to say instead of leaving for assumptions. Level-Headed Leaders control their emotions and don’t react to situations, instead they will analyze the situation by taking a pause and understand the bigger picture of the situation and then respond how to tackle it. Leadership is always considered as authority or power which many people like to have and control and dictate things. Leadership is responsibility and capability to empower people to do the best and perform the best. In Corporate world, everybody aspires to be a leader but very few becomes a true leader. Indian IT sector has lot of great leaders, but still it needs lot more effective and strong leaders to make India a true global power. I have been working in corporate field for more than two decades and has seen lot of managers, leaders and bosses. Based on those experiences and lessons learnt, will try to share the leadership aspects and traits in my upcoming blogs… Trust is the first thing which any leader should practice and implement.
